What a good estimate includes
- A short description of the work and where it will happen
- Separate lines for labor, materials and any fees
- Quantities and unit prices, so the customer can see the math
- Tax, if you charge it, and the estimated total
- A valid-until date and any assumptions or exclusions
Estimate vs. quote
An estimate is your best guess at the cost — the final bill can change if the job turns out bigger or smaller. A quote is a fixed price the customer can accept. If you're not sure of the scope yet, send an estimate. When the price is settled, send a quote or go straight to the invoice.
