What to include on an Australian invoice

  • The word "Invoice" (not "Tax invoice" if you are not registered for GST)
  • Your name or business name and your ABN
  • The invoice date and a unique invoice number
  • The customer's name and address
  • A description of the goods or services, quantities and prices
  • The total amount payable and your payment details

Why your ABN matters

If you supply goods or services to a business and don't quote an ABN, the payer may be required to withhold tax from the payment at the top marginal rate. Showing your ABN on every invoice avoids this.

If you are not registered for GST, don't add GST and don't call the document a tax invoice. Once you register, switch to a tax invoice with GST shown.

Questions

Do I need to be registered for GST?

Registration is required once your GST turnover reaches the ATO threshold (or immediately for taxi and ride-sourcing drivers). Below it, it's optional.

What's the difference between an invoice and a tax invoice?

Only GST-registered businesses issue tax invoices showing GST. Everyone else issues a regular invoice with their ABN.
