Fill in your invoice
What a UK invoice must include
- The word "Invoice" and a unique invoice number
- Your business name, address and contact details
- The customer's company name (or name) and address
- A clear description of what you are charging for
- The date the goods or services were supplied and the date of the invoice
- The amount for each item and the total amount owed
Sole traders and limited companies
Sole traders should show their own name and any business name they trade under. Limited companies should show their full registered company name; if you include any directors' names, include all of them. Many companies also add their company number and registered office address.
If you are not VAT registered you must not charge VAT or show a VAT amount. Once you register, use a VAT invoice with your VAT registration number.
Questions
Do I need to charge VAT?
Only if you are VAT registered. Registration is compulsory once your VAT-taxable turnover passes the HMRC threshold; below it, registration is optional.
Can I use this as a self-employed invoice template?
Yes — it works for sole traders, freelancers and contractors. Add your bank details in Notes so clients can pay by transfer.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. The invoice is built and turned into a PDF in your browser. Your details are saved only on this device.
